Weekend Roundup: Polar Vortex Edition

What a week it’s been, with temps hovering in the single digits and wind chills at the “I’m not going out there” level. A reprieve (of sorts) is on the way with a small January Thaw in store for the weekend. Here’s hoping this weekend’s events can thaw your frozen spirit!

Thursday

7 Monks BurgerTonight 7 Monks re-opens from a short break with Unibroue Tap Night featuring 5 great Belgian inspired ales from Quebec brewery Unibroue. Also, how about a shout-out to 7 Monks for being named as one of America’s 100 Great Beer Bars for 2014 by Draft Magazine? Way to go!!

Billy Strings & Don Julin will be playing and recording at Little Bohemia Thursday from 8-10. It’s one of only 4 gigs they are going to play in January, so brave the cold, have dinner or some drinks, support local music, and maybe even be on a recording!

It’s Thursday and that means former Steppin’ In It members Josh Davis and Joe Wilson will be playing at the Workshop Brewing Co. from 7-10.

Head over to InsideOut tonight from 7-10 PM for their Audio Potluck. It’s billed as “open, live music experimentation” and includes drink specials.

Friday

The Jeff Haas Faction will be playing their electrifying and original jazz at InsideOut Friday night from 8-11 PM. No cover and they have drink & martini specials all night.

Saturday

Every Saturday it’s the Indoor Farm Market at the Village from 10 AM – 2 PM. We say it every week, but if you’re missing the market, you’re missing out on one of the best cabin fever reducers in Northern Michigan!

The family-friendly Downtown Traverse City Chili Cook-off (11 AM – 3 PM) is an annual fundraiser at the Park Place has area restaurants compete for top honors in eight chili categories (1,2 and 3 Alarm, White, Seafood, No Bean, Ethnic and Vegetarian.).

There’s a real treat at InsideOut on Saturday night from Stella!, a four-piece, all-women, American roots band from southeast Michigan. The show starts at 8 and they are well worth the $10 admission. Don’t believe us? Head over to their website and check out some of their videos!

Sunday

Short-listed several times for the James Beard Best Chef in the Midwest award, Chef Myles Anton of Trattoria Stella will pull out his big knives for The Pig Workshop from noon – 3 PM at The Box. You’ll learn how to butcher half a pig into the raw parts needed for classic Italian preparations. He’ll then cycle through several dishes that feature the individual cuts. Cost is $100 and space is limited to 10.

Chef Jen Blakeslee of the Cooks’ House has become known around the state for her curries. Although her Sunday class is sold out, The Little Fleet announced this week that they will be serving Cooks House curry from 5-8 PM every Tuesday thru Saturday at the bar! Short’s Brewing is offering a tour of their Elk Rapids Production Facility that will take you through their brewing, bottling, and packaging processes. This tour is well suited for larger groups, takes about 1.5 hours and includes a Short’s logo pint glass and a complimentary 12 oz. pour for just $10.
