Hooray, hooray, it’s the month of May! Although it has felt like winter would never end, signs of spring are popping up including wild leeks for about a week and just yesterday, the first reports of morels being found!

Art at Brew

The Downtown Traverse City Association invites you to the annual Downtown Art Walk showcasing 18 art exhibits throughout downtown TC from 5-9 PM. Enjoy an evening of art, refreshments, food and music on a self guided tour throughout Downtown Traverse City. Artists from the Grand Traverse region and beyond will be present with their works. Refreshments will be offered at various locations throughout the evening, and your purchase of a commemorative wine glass and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Downtown Public Art Fund. Speaking of art, Brew invites you to check out New Art at Brew featuring Georgia Taylor’s “Within the Cocoon” & “Abstract” art series, the Green Room’s Terrarium Bar and Live Music with Blake Elliot & E Minor from 8-10pm.

It’s the First Friday of May which means its time for First Friday in the Village from 5-8 PM. The theme is Kentucky Derby Party! and they will pay homage to the Kentucky Derby, by celebrating HATS! Village Merchants will be offering special discounts, drinks & delicacies to participants in hats. But not just any hats…they’ve got to be FUNKY!  Musical performances are Don Julin & Billy Strings at Left Foot Charley Winery and The Accidentals at South Mercato!

While you’re checking out First Friday, Savor the Tastes & Flavors at Tastes from 5-8 PM. This month’s theme is What’s in Your Mash Tun? and you can learn by tasting how grain types contribute to the distinctive flavor characteristics of whiskeys with Grand Traverse Distillery. Wine and appetizers provided at each event, $3 per person and $5 per couple.

The Workshop Brewing Co hosts Girls w/ Guitars from 8-11 PM. If you come out for one night this spring, make this the night: an incredible amount of talent, all in one place, and your last chance to catch them before they embark on tour.  The Accidentals, Missy Zenker, Blake Elliott, Olivia Mainville, AND E Minor! NO COVER! Come out to The Workshop and be blown away by Traverse City’s amazing local Girls with Guitars.

Saturday, May 3rd

Every Saturday from May through October, the Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market comes to Parking Lot B, at the corner of Cass and Grandview Parkway. It’s the place for the freshest Traverse City has to offer with local produce, baked goods, flowers and plants. 7 Monks & Low Bar invite you to celebrate the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby with mint juleps, southern inspired food specials and Kentucky Breakfast Stout!

On Saturday from 4-Midnight the Little Fleet is hosting a Kentucky Derby Party. They’ll be serving up $4 Mint Juleps and watching the 140th Kentucky Derby live on their new projector. Best hats will be awarded. 

Every Saturday at 3 PM enjoy Kids Open Mic at Northern Naturals – come to listen or perform. Also enjoy the Younce Guitar Duo at the Workshop and Ultraviolet Hippopotamus wsg/ G Snacks plays InsideOut Saturday, May 3rd (and also Friday night).

Next Week & Weekend

On May 5th check out the Cinco De Mayo Throwdown at Little Fleet for special Mexican Cocktails, the food trucks will be dishing up South of the Border grub, Hot Pepper Competition, and Pinatas! Digs & Swigs at Black Star Farms brings back the Crazy 80s. It was a decade of Chardonnay, Merlot, and hideous fashion! Show them the fashion you rocked out and receive samples of their Arcturos Barrel-Aged and Sur Lie Chardonnay. Inquiries, call 231-944-1271. 

On Saturday May 10th, Chateau Chantal hosts a Mothers Day Wine Dinner featuring a winery tour and a wine dinner for Mom!

Celebrating the Morel is the theme of next weekend’s dinners at the Boathouse. Next Saturday is also the annual Mesick Mushroom Festival. Each spring the village of Mesick celebrates the tasty but elusive morel mushroom with a parade, carnival rides, games, 5K, softball tourney – and a contest to see who can find the biggest mushroom in the woods.
