Left Foot Charley, Doug Frost and the Jefferson Cup

Left Foot Charley 7th Hill RieslingThe Jefferson Cup Invitational wine competition features the best of the best from all of America’s wine regions. On the weekend of November 21-22, 2013 in Kansas City, Missouri the judges tasted 700 wines selected to showcase the best in viticulture and winemaking from twenty-two states.

The top honor, the Jefferson Cup, was awarded to just 25 wines. Among the recipients were winemakers Bryan Ulbrich and Drew Perry and growers Tom and Linda Scheuerman for Left Foot Charley’s 7th Hill Riesling (2012), the second time in two years that the single vineyard Riesling has won the Cup!

Ulbrich says, “There’s only a handful of competitions we enter, and we’ve just entered this one twice. I like this one because it’s not just a pay your way in – they have to invite you.” Read more

Wine Beat: Three Fires Wine & Skipping Stone Cellars

MyNorth.com reports on a pair of tasting rooms that will hold their grand opening this Saturday:

Dave and Ileana Habsburg-Snyder are excited to announce the opening of their two new wine tasting rooms in Suttons Bay, Michigan, Three Fires Wine and Skipping Stone Cellars. The Grand Opening of the side-by-side locations take place this Saturday, October 12th from 2pm to 6pm.

The tasting rooms are located side-by-side on M22 at Hilltop Road on the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula just south of Suttons Bay.

We’ll try and get out there to get you a first look, but if not, I’m betting that as one of the more savvy social media folks in the area, Ileana will have all kinds of photos posted to the Skipping Stone Cellars Facebook!

Harbor 22 receives Wine Spectator Award of Excellence!

MyNorth reports that Harbor 22 has received a major award from Wine Spectator for their wine list:

Harbor 22 Bar and Grill of Traverse City has been named by Wine Spectator magazine as a recipient of its 2013 Award of Excellence. Located on the shore of West Grand Traverse Bay, Harbor 22 features an extensive wine list with over 133 selections. Along with a wide selection of California wines, Harbor 22 features many varieties from local vineyards. “We are especially proud of the Wine Spectator award since this marks our first full year of business”, said Karen Simpson. The Simpson family, Ian and Karen and Ian and Veronika, purchased the former Scott’s Harbor Grill in 2012 and have extensively remodeled and redecorated the entire restaurant as well as adding a new bar on the outdoor deck overlooking Harbor West Marina and the Bay.
