Last weekend, two northern Michigan breweries brought back medals from the premier craft brewing event in the country, the Great American Beer Festival.

Breweries & brewers from all over the country took part in the Great American Beer Festival in Boulder, CO. Short’s Brewing Company of Bellaire was awarded the Gold medal for Experimental Beer and Stormcloud Brewing Company of Frankfort received the Bronze medal for Belgian-Style Blonde Ale or Pale Ale!

Crowd-at-the-Great-American-Beer-Festival“At Short’s, we celebrate new and unique ideas. We seek inspiration everywhere, and constantly challenge ourselves to capture new experiences in beer form. The creative freedom and endless possibilities that we entertain here makes brewing fun, and I think that shows in the finished beer,” says Short’s Head Brewer and Key Lime Pie creator, Tony Hansen. “Winning an award for an experimental beer feels great. It’s really the only category that we fit into! Our beers are intentionally unique and different than established styles, so the recognition for successfully experimenting keeps our creative motor running.”

Stormcloud brewer Brian Confer offers his congratulations to Short’s for winning the highly contested Experimental beer category and says “This was our first ever entry into any kind of competition. I’m proud that our Rainmaker took a Bronze out of 44 entries. Rainmaker is the beer I worked longest and hardest on as a homebrewer,  the beer that I used in the yeast trials to pick what would become our house yeast, and I brewed it once every three weeks for many years, continually making small recipe tweaks until it became the beer it is today – a 6% immensely drinkable, not overly-hopped pale ale with a spicy Belgian yeast character that goes great with almost all foods – except spaghetti!”

Brian continues, “We couldn’t be happier to get this award and be part of the northern Michigan brew scene. I’m probably biased but I think the number and quality of breweries in the Traverse City area makes it a more vibrant place to live.”

You can taste that quality during the 2014 Traverse City Beer Week (Nov 7-14) and during Frankfort’s inaugural Beer Week that runs through October 11th!
