Friday Cocktail Hour: The Twirling Derby by Low Bar’s Evan McKolay

On many Fridays, we feature original cocktails from some of Traverse City’s most creative cocktail artists in our Friday Cocktail Hour. Our thanks go out to Michael Ruhlman for letting us share his Friday Cocktail Hour concept

Evan McKolay has been tending the bar at Low Bar since they opened on the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition December 5th. You may remember him from Poppycocks and the Beacon Lounge.

Low Bar’s Evan McKolay & The Twirling Derby

He’s been a bartender for twelve years and says, “I really like the social aspect of bartending. It’s like a social hour every time I get behind the bar, and I get to meet people from all over the world. It’s fun to work with alcohol too. You can make up so many different drinks, and when I make someone an amazing drink I really like the look of satisfaction on their face.”

He’s going to try and put that satisfied look on a bunch of faces tomorrow when Low Bar and 7 Monks put their Derby hats to celebrate the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. In addition to southern influenced food specials, some great Kentucky bourbons and traditional mint juleps, Evan has concocted a special julep influenced cocktail specifically for the occasion!

2 oz Real Russian Vodka
.75 oz Simple Sugar
