Chef Harlan “Pete” Peterson is legendary in Northern Michigan for pioneering farm to table at his restaurant Tapawingo. On Friday, February 28th he will join Simon Joseph of Roaming Harvest at The Little Fleet to present an innovative and seasonal dinner.
With his food truck Roaming Harvest, Simon has become one of Traverse City’s current champions of the local table. He explains, “We’ll have 9 great dishes featuring seasonal and local food that you can enjoy in a family-style setting with a like-minded group of people who really care about what they eat and where it comes from. I think it will be informal, fun and something that will push the culinary envelope.”
While Simon and Pete prefer to surprise you with their unique creations next Friday, I got a look at their menu, and it offers an original and varied selection that includes a vegetarian option for the main course. One of the most unique things about the meal will be the way it’s structured. Rather than a course-by course service, the meal will begin with 6 dishes brought by bowl and platter that are designed to be shared among a small section of the table followed by a main course and a dessert prepared by pastry chef Michelle Rodriguez.
“There can be so much waste with individually plated items, but when you allow folks to pass dishes and take more or less as they prefer, you satisfy everyone and create opportunities for conversation,” says Chef Pete. “If I were opening a restaurant today, I think about half of the items would be shared food. People want to try everything so they’re ordering and sharing – it’s a very organic thing.”
This will be the sixth dinner The Little Fleet has hosted, and owner Gary Jonas says, “The Little Fleet is all about having fun, and we created it with an idea of making a community space where we can bring people together to enjoy good food and drink and each other’s company. I think that this dinner exemplifies what we’re all about. It’s all about having a chance to come together and share some good time with friends you know and maybe make some new ones.”
